Sister Mary Simeon Mahoney, who taught for many years at parochial schools across Maryland, died Wednesday of a stroke at her order's Pinehurst retirement home. She was 87.
Born Mary Margaret Mahoney in East Providence, R.I., she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1937 and earned a degree in social studies from the old Mount St. Agnes College in Mount Washington and master's degrees from Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee and Catholic University of America in Washington.
She began teaching at the old Mount St. Agnes School in 1940 and later held posts at schools including Little Flower in Woodstock, St. Peter's in Oakland and Villa Maria in Timonium.
In the mid-1950s, she was treasurer at what is now Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore.
Her last assignment was as pastoral associate at St. Anthony Church in Northeast Washington.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the order's Villa retirement home, 6806 Bellona Ave.
Survivors include two sisters, Charlotte Kennedy of Berlin and Regina Gloyd of Silver Spring.
