On July, 8, 2003, PHILIP VAIL, age 79, retired Social Service Executive. Mr. Vail was a lifelong member of Media Friends Meeting of the Society of Friends, attend Westtown Friends School in West Chester, PA, and received a Bachelors degree in Philosopy from Haverford College in 1951. For many years he served on the General Committee of Westtown School and on the Board of Directors of the Kendal Crosslands Retirement Community in Kennett Square, PA. He was a conscientious objector during World War II and performed alternative service as a psychiatric aide at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, VA, and with the National Park Service, Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Mr. Vail was trained at the renowned Menninger Clinic in Topeka, KS, earned a Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland and was Executive Director of Maryland Children's Aid and Family Service until his retirement in 1986. He is also remembered for his lifelong passion for bird watching. He is survived by his wife, Vivienne, three children Victoria Nardozzi, Stephen, Garrett and seven grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Kendal at Longwood, Kennett Square, PA, on July 19, 2003, at 11 A.M. Contributions may be made to Kendal Reserve Fund, Kendal at Longwood, Kennett Square, PA, 19348, or to the Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Arlington, VA, 22203.
