Benson, John Fisher

DR. JOHN FISHER BENSON, M.D. of High Point, N.C. died Wednesday, June 25, 2003 returning from the beach where he had been celebrating his 80th birthday with his children and grandchildren. Dr. Benson was a retired specialist in Rheumatology. After earning a B.S. from the University of Maryland in 1945, where he also completed medical school in 1947, he married the late Alene Bradley Benson in 1948. After serving in a MASH unit in Korea, he opened the High Point Rheumatology Clinic in 1955. He served as Chief of Medicine at High Point Memorial Hospital in 1959 and 1980 and as Chief of Staff in 1972. Dr. Benson also served as an assistant professor of medicine in the Department of Rheumatology at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine since 1958. He was an avid gardener, an accomplished magician, and a member of the Debon-Aire Dance Club. Dr. Benson was born July 3, 1923 in Baltimore to Dr. and Mrs. Carl F. Benson. He is survived by his four children, Carole Spence of Asheville, David Benson of Oak Hill, VA, Janet Steelman of Greensboro, and Barbara Benson Zaionz of Davidson, and nine grandchildren, Jeff Spence, Evan Spence, Patrick Spence, Lindsay Benson, Allison Benson, Adam Steelman, Daniel Steelman, Erik Steelman, and Julie Steelman. Funeral Services will be at 1:30 PM Sunday in Sechrest Chapel. by Dr Robert U. Ferguson, Jr. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM at Sechrest Funeral Service on East Lexington Ave. Interment services will be at 6:00 PM Sunday in Gaston Memorial Park Cemetery in Gastonia, NC. Memorials can be sent to High Point Regional Health System Cancer Center 601 N. Elm Street High Point, NC.
