A multivehicle accident Saturday claimed the life yesterday of a Gaithersburg man who had been out for a weekend motorcycle drive with his wife, state police said.

Barry Joseph Hemler, 41, died about 3 a.m. at Maryland Shock Trauma Center of injuries he suffered in a crash on Route 27 at Hahn Road about 11 a.m. Saturday. His wife, Cynthia, 44, who was driving a separate motorcycle, was treated and released.

The Hemlers were traveling north on Route 27 on their Harley-Davidson motorcycles when a southbound 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a youth from Hanover, Pa., rear-ended a pickup truck at a red light at Hahn Road, then crossed into the northbound lane, police said. The pickup truck driver and the Jeep's driver and passengers were taken to Carroll County General Hospital, police said.
