The Rev. Edward J. Tinney, 90, pastor, hospital chaplain

The Rev. Edward Joseph Tinney, who taught at Loyola High School and later was a pastor and hospital chaplain, died in his sleep Tuesday at Loyola Center Jesuit Infirmary at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. He was 90.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, he was a 1931 graduate of St. Joseph's Preparatory School. He entered the Society of Jesus that year at St. Isaac Jogues Novitiate in Wernersville, Pa.

Father Tinney earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1937 from St. Louis University and completed additional theological studies at Woodstock College in Maryland. He taught Latin and English at Loyola High School from 1938 to 1941, when he returned to Woodstock College.

He was ordained at the college by Archbishop Michael J. Curley in 1944, and professed his final vows in the Jesuit Order at Loyola High School in 1948.

After teaching at Loyola High School, he served as chaplain at Georgetown University Hospital and at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Washington.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Jesuit Community Chapel of St. Joseph, 5600 City Ave., Philadelphia.

Survivors include a nephew, Gerard Schmid of Southampton, Pa., and a niece, Sister Margaret Ann Schmid of Olney, Va.
