Spiritual `Emanations'

Emanations, an exhibition of the spiritually infused work of Baltimore artist Ryan Higgins, will be on display Sunday at the Minas Gallery.

The oil and encaustic paintings showcase the young artist's penchant for Tibetan Buddhism, conveying both innocence and power through subject and style.

With little formal art training, Higgins isn't affected by the traditional rules of classical figure and landscape construction. The resultant works aren't tight or refined. Rather, they burst with organic life, a style that complements the meditative and intense nature of the painter.

"I want to travel beyond the veil of my vision and uncover what is divine," Higgins wrote in his artist's statement. "Through my work, I seek to illustrate the whole sphere of perception and to illuminate life's details and textures."

Emanations will be at the Minas Gallery, 733 S. Ann St., through Aug. 31. Hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesdays-Mondays. For more information, call 410-732-4258.

MFA spring show

Virginia Shore, senior curator of the State Department's Arts in Embassies Program, is the juror for the Maryland Federation of Art's spring exhibition, on display today through June 28 at the City Gallery.

Shore, who curates exhibits for U.S. embassies around the world, has chosen a melange of media and styles for this year's show. Gallery Director Pam Wilson said the annual display is traditionally competitive, with only about 40 of the more than 250 submissions chosen for exhibition.

Past shows have included a diverse collection of art, including glass sculpture, fiberworks and watercolor.

The Maryland Federation of Art, City Gallery, is at 330 N. Charles St. Hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. The gallery will remain open until 8 p.m. on June 5. An opening reception will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. tomorrow. For more information, call 410-685-0300.
