DANIEL H. BURKHARDT, born January 2, 1916 to Howard and Lula Burkhardt in New York City, NY. died May 20, 2003 in Kingwood, Texas, at the age of 87, after a lifetime of service to his God and country. He was a WWII Marine Corps veteran, and a 57-year Life Member of The American Legion of Maryland, where he served as the State Adjutant from 1949 to 1981. In recognition of his distinguished service record, Dan was elected to the high office of Legion Past Department Commander at the close of the 82nd Annual State Convention in July 2000. Dan was also active in the Masonic Bodies of Maryland for more than 50 years. In addition, he was the Director of the American Legion's Boys State Program for over a decade. Dan was also the driving force for the inscription "Time Will Not Dim The Glory Of Their Deeds" on the Baltimore Memorial Stadium's Facade. He was a strong advocate of crime prevention and served as a volunteer with the Maryland State Police at BWI Airport for many years. Two and one-half years ago, Dan and his wife moved to Kingwood, TX to be close to family. Mr Burkhardt is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Libby) James Burkhardt of Kingwood, TX; son, Dan Burkhardt, Jr and his wife Marlene of Kingwood, TX; grandsons Dr. Dan Burkhardt, III of San Francisco, CA, and Mike Burkhardt and his wife Elizabeth of Dallas, TX; niece Dorothy Soethe of Arnold, MD; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will take place in Maryland at a future date.
