Maryland vs. Virginia

Tomorrow's semifinal: Approximately 2:30 p.m.

When Maryland has the ball

May 23, 2003

The Terps like to shorten the game with a deliberate attack, so as to play to their strength on defense.

Maryland has struggled shooting the ball for much of the season, although attackmen Dan LaMonica and Brian Hunt each has converted more than 40 percent of his chances.

The Terps must convert high-percentage shots, especially early against Virginia goalie Tillman Johnson, who has had an outstanding season. Freshman attackman Joe Walters (33 goals, 13 assists) and senior midfielder/attackman Mike Mollot are keys.

Mollott figures to draw a long pole, which should free up senior midfielder Ryan Moran (24 goals) to work against a short stick. Virginia's defense, led by seniors Chris Rotelli and Brett Hughes, is maybe the best unit coach Dom Starsia has had during his 11 seasons in Charlottesville.
