Margaret E. Daugherty, 82, nurse in veterans hospitals

Margaret E. Daugherty, a World War II veteran who later was a head nurse at several veterans hospitals, died of congestive heart failure Monday at Grand View Hospital in Bucks County, Pa. The former Cub Hill resident was 82.

Miss Daugherty was born and raised in Meyersdale, Pa., and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. She enlisted in the Army Nursing Corps during World War II and served in Paris. She was discharged with the rank of lieutenant.

After the war, she was head nurse at veterans hospitals in Pittsburgh, Birmingham, Ala., Puerto Rico and Roseburg, Ore. She came to Baltimore to serve as head nurse at the veterans hospital on Loch Raven Boulevard. She retired in 1980.

Miss Daugherty enjoyed taking art classes and painting with oils. She was an avid reader and walker.

Since 1998, the former Dendron Court resident had lived at a retirement home in Harleysville, Pa.

Miss Daugherty was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 8808 Harford Road, where a memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

She is survived by a brother-in-law, Nevin Schrock Jr. of Lakeland, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.
