McDaniel investiture scheduled for today

McDaniel College will present academic, activity and leadership awards to members of the Class of 2003, faculty and alumni at 2 p.m. today at the annual Senior Investiture and Honors Convocation.

Awards to be announced are: the Distinguished Teaching Award; the Bates Prize and Mary Ward Lewis Prize for the most outstanding male and female graduating senior, respectively; and the John A. Alexander Medal for the top senior athlete. Each academic department also recognizes its top students with an endowed prize.

The board of trustees will give alumni career and service achievement awards to William L. Hawkins Jr., Class of 1948, a motivational speaker who retired from United States Fidelity and Guaranty Co. as director of sales and marketing; and Donald J. Shure, Class of 1971, professor emeritus of biology at Emory University.

Also recognized are graduating members of the college's honors program, and students inducted into the following honor societies and organizations: Phi Beta Kappa; Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities; Omicron Delta Kappa, a national honor society recognizing leadership qualities; and the Trumpeters, a local honor society honoring students dedicated to service.

Graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2003 will be held at 2 p.m. May 24.

College-bound athletes to be topic of talk May 12

The Westminster High School Athletic Boosters will present a motivational talk for college-bound student athletes and their parents at 7:30 p.m. May 12 in the school auditorium.

Motivational speaker and author Rick Wire will discuss "The Student-Athlete and College Recruiting." His program, developed to help his own son succeed in academics and athletics, focuses on academics, marketing, athletics and recruiting.

Students in eighth through 12th grades and their parents are welcome to attend and learn about preparing for college athletics, athletic scholarship, marketing oneself to coaches, improving the chances of being recruited and academic requirements needed to play in college.

A guide book for parents and students will be available.

Proposed school materials available for public review

The Carroll County public school system is inviting the public to review instructional materials being considered for adoption.

Materials will be on display through May 14 at the Resource Center in the Board of Education offices at 125 N. Court St., Westminster. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

The community can review and comment on the materials.

The Curriculum Council will meet May 15 to approve materials. Approved materials will go to the Board of Education for final adoption.

Board of Education to honor employees

The Board of Education of Carroll County will hold three ceremonies to recognize the achievements of students and employees.

An employee recognition ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Room 007 of the board offices, 125 N. Court St., Westminster.

A student recognition ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. May 21 at Century High School, 355 Ronsdale Road, near Eldersburg.

The board will honor employees for length of service at a pinning ceremony at 7 p.m. May 29 at Winters Mill High School, 560 Gorsuch Road, Westminster.

`First Steps' orientations scheduled this month

People age 16 and older who want to learn about high school diploma options and other programs, and have their math and reading skills evaluated, can attend a free "First Steps" orientation.

Introductory programs will be held:

From 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. May 19 at Business and Employment Resource Center, 224 N. Center St., Westminster.

From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 21 at Northeast Social Action Program, 1046 S. Carroll St., Hampstead.

From 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. May 27 at Student Support Services and Carroll Adult Learning Connection, 1135 Business Parkway South, Suite 30, Westminster.

Community college opens registration

Carroll Community College is holding walk-in registration for Summer Terms I and II at 1601 Washington Road campus in Westminster.

Summer Term I registration continues from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday through May 29 and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays until May 30. Classes begin June 2.

Registration for Summer Term II continues the same hours as above until July 3. Classes begin July 7.

Chamber of Commerce offers $750 scholarships

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the Charles D. Schaffer Scholarship.

The chamber will award a $750 scholarship to one senior from each Carroll County public high school with a graduating class.

The scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated a drive to succeed and who have been Carroll County residents for at least one year, demonstrate involvement in community affairs, need financial assistance and plan to attend a Maryland college for at least one year with course studies in business, economics or the practical arts.

Applications are available from the high school guidance offices. Each high school will determine the recipient.
