Councilman adds to constituency

Nicholas Jules Merdon was born to Michelle Karen Melotti and County Councilman Christopher J. Merdon on April 7.

Melotti, a radiologist, is on maternity leave for eight weeks. "I'm enjoying every minute of it," she said. "Holding him as much as I can. You appreciate so much more after you've already had the first one because you realize how quickly they grow. So I'm trying to savor every day."

Nicholas' sister, April Dominique, will be 3 years old Thursday.

The couple moved to Howard County from Philadelphia. Melotti was a medical student at Temple University and Merdon was in his final undergraduate year at Temple when they met.

"Since I had to finish up medical school, he decided to take a graduate degree so we graduated on the same day," Melotti said. Merdon received a master's degree in public administration.

Melotti comes from Pittsburgh, Merdon from Long Island, N.Y. The couple moved to Elkridge when Melotti began a residency at University of Maryland Medical Center.

"By chance we picked an apartment in Elkridge and Chris just got involved right away with the Howard County Republican Club, and the opportunity arose that they needed a councilman for District 1, and he ran," Melotti said. "He campaigned for two years because we knew nobody here when we moved here. So he had to campaign pretty hard. He actually knocked on about 8,500 doors."

Merdon, who works as a business developer for a computer science company, is in his fifth year as county councilman, Melotti said.

"He really does like it. I guess you have to, to juggle two jobs," she said.
