Farm Museum to offer traditional-arts classes

Wool felting, tin knocking among scheduled courses

The Carroll County Farm Museum is offering traditional-arts classes starting next month.

"18th-Century American Painted Tinware": The cost is $40 for one day. Students will learn painting techniques on tinware projects from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as follows: May 19 and June 3, round tin canister (intermediate level); May 29 and June 17, tin tray (beginner and intermediate).

"American Folk Art Painting": Students will learn techniques of folk art painting from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as follows: May 8, "Hearts & Flowers" painted planter (beginner and intermediate), $40; May 15, "Simple Strokes" painted candleholder (beginner and intermediate), $40; June 10, wooden patriotic Santa-shaped plate (intermediate), $48.

Basket-making classes: from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 3, wall/door basket, $35; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 17, Williamsburg twill, $50 (experienced only).

Fruit Carving": from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 17, $20. Students will carve an apple bird and a melon fruit bowl and learn how to carve a watermelon lantern at home. A carving kit will be included.

Gardening and flower workshops: from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. June 3, topiaries, $18; from 9 a.m. to noon June 3, bridal flowers, $30 (students should take fresh flowers, clippers or pruners, and small scissors); from 10 a.m. to noon June 10, lavender; from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 24, perennials and daylilies, $15, students will travel to the Eldersburg area for a perennial garden tour and lecture, with a focus on daylilies (take lunch).

"Grain Painting": from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 24, $40. Students will use a traditional decorative or faux painting technique on a picture frame and small box.

"Herbal Vinegars": from 9 a.m. to noon July 16, $15.

"Shaker Boxes" (2-session beginners class): from noon to 4:30 p.m. June 16 and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 17, $125. Students will make a nest of five graduated-size boxes in cherry wood in the traditional style of the Shaker pantry box.

"Tin Knocking": Students of all skill levels will learn to make tinware products and will learn the art of tin piercing. Students should take gloves. Classes will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 24, $45; June 23-25, $125; July 28-30, $125.

Woodcarving": from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 3, Uncle Sam figure from a World War II poster, $65; June 10, eagle with flag, $65; June 17, fishing lure, $60.

"Wool Felting": from 9 a.m. to noon June 19, $15. Students will learn the basics of felting wool starting with raw fiber. Projects will be a felted square, a pouch and a ball. This class is open to age 9 and older.

Professional instructors teach all classes. All materials are provided unless noted. Registration is complete when payment has been received. Requests for full refunds must be received at least 10 days before the start of the class (after that time, payment may be applied to a future class). A minimum number of students is required to start each class.
