Elderly woman killed in Towson apartment fire

April 26, 2003|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

An elderly woman was killed yesterday morning in a fire at her apartment in Towson, Baltimore County Fire Department officials said.

The woman, who rented a ground-floor apartment at Charlesgate Apartments just off Bellona Avenue near Charles Street, was not immediately identified because fire investigators had not contacted relatives.

The woman, in her early 90s, was trapped and died inside her bedroom, where the fire apparently started about 7 a.m., said Lt. Vernon Adamson, a Fire Department spokesman.

The fire caused smoke damage to the apartment above the woman's unit. But the other four apartments in the brick building in the 8400 block of Charles Valley Court were not damaged, Adamson said.

Smoke detectors appeared to have been operating, he said.

A representative from the apartment complex, incorporated as Charlesgate Acceptance LLC, declined to comment on the fire or the tenant. Neighbors also declined to speak about the victim.
