Shirley D. Mumford, 81, elementary school teacher

Shirley Dorothea Mumford, a retired elementary school teacher, died of cancer Thursday at her Chestertown home. The former Towson resident was 81.

Before retiring in 1981, she taught fourth grade and kindergarten at Hampton and Perry Hall elementary schools. Many years ago, she taught at Sir Robert Eden Elementary in East Baltimore.

Born in Newark, Worcester County, Miss Mumford was a 1938 graduate of Snow Hill High School. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education at what is now Towson University. She enjoyed bird-watching and gardening.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Chestertown, where she was a member and sang in the choir.

Survivors include a son, Stephen R. Smith of Suwanee, Ga.; two daughters, Lynn Smith Short of Lutherville and Janet Smith Shepherd of Iowa City, Iowa; three grandsons; and eight great-grandchildren. Her marriages to David Ransom Smith and J. Cullen Weadock ended in divorce.
