Westminster tree plantings will celebrate Arbor Week

Westminster will celebrate Arbor Week today through Friday with tree plantings and other activities.

Today, replacement ginkgo and honeylocust trees will be planted on West Main Street. Tomorrow, bald cypress trees will be planted at the city playground, where trees will be pruned Wednesday.

Japanese yews and fothergill gardenii will be planted Thursday at the city pool and City Hall grounds. An Arbor Day proclamation will be made Friday, along with tree plantings by Winters Mill High School students and the Westminster Tree Commission at the school.

Church ministry leads lunch, fellowship session

Grace Lutheran Church's Stephen Ministry members and church members who live at Carroll Lutheran Village recently shared a brown-bag lunch and afternoon of fellowship.

Marj Espenschade, Stephen Ministry coordinator, arranged the lunch, and Arline Lerda, a member of the Bible study class, provided music. Sharon Palmquist led the singing of grace before the meal.

Almost 40 Carroll Lutheran Village residents from the campus cottages, apartments, assisted living and health care center attended the lunch, which they normally have separately in their respective facility.

The village chaplain, the Rev. Jimmie Schwartz, also attended. Grace's associate pastor, the Rev. Richard Krebs, offered a brief service of Communion afterward.

Ministerium to discuss drawing young families

The Westminster Ministerium will meet at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Westminster Church of the Brethren. Pastor Twyla Rowe will lead a discussion on "Attracting and Retaining Young Families in Churches."

All Christian ministers and those who work in specialized ministries are welcome. The Church of the Brethren is at Bond Street and Park Place. Information: 410-848-8090.

Finksburg area council to meet, elect officers

The Finksburg Planning Area Council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sandy Mount United Methodist Church.

The agenda will include election of officers, and updates on River Downs expansion plans by Steve Reeves, Bonds Forest Assisted Living and the new grocery store in Finksburg.

All Finksburg residents and business owners are welcome.

Towson alumni to honor 8 at annual banquet Friday

Towson University's Alumni Association will honor eight alumni, including one from Westminster, at its annual distinguished alumni and dean's awards banquet Friday.

Jack L. Chalker, a 1966 graduate of the college of liberal arts, will be honored with the dean's recognition award, given to alumni who have distinguished themselves in their field. Chalker is a novelist and owner of Mirage Press.

Church flea market is planned Saturday

The Ladies Aid of Trinity Lutheran Church will hold a flea market with lunch from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Baked goods table will be sold. Proceeds will buy tablecloths for the church.

Basket bingo will benefit developmentally disabled

CHANGE Inc. will hold basket bingo May 2 at the Gamber fire hall to raise money for programs for the developmentally disabled.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and games will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Refreshments will be available. The fire hall is on Route 32 at Niner Road.

Church group will hold pancake brunch tomorrow

Westminster United Methodist Church M&M's group will hold a pancake brunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow in Jubilee Hall of the church.

The cost will be $4.25. The church is at 162 E. Main St.

Navy's Cowperthwaite takes part in Iraq action

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Brandon D. Cowperthwaite is participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, based in Norfolk, Va.

The Truman is the lead ship for the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Battle Group.

Cowperthwaite is the son of Evelyn Savage of Westminster. He joined the Navy in June 1999.
