Sophomores from John Carroll School in Bel Air participated in a community service project in Aberdeen last week.

The 10th-graders helped with Rebuilding Together's annual "Christmas in April" project. The students helped with cleanup and landscaping Tuesday near Halls Cross Elementary School and the Boys and Girls Club of Aberdeen.

The service project involved the revitalization of a playground at Victory Street Park and cleanup of the neighborhood surrounding the park within walking distance of the Boys and Girls Club.

Tasks included planting flowers, mulching trees and shrubs, cleaning up trash in Victory Street Park (where Aberdeen has just installed playground equipment) and its surrounding picnic areas, basketball courts and the nearby residential areas, painting over graffiti near the train station and gathering trash and other debris in the area.

"This opportunity for a class-wide community service project comes ... at a time when our school is putting greater emphasis on our individual and collective efforts in following Jesus' call in the Gospels to greater love of and service for our neighbor," said Sue Larney Greig, a spokeswoman for the school's alumni association.
