Senior Greg Conklin scored a career-high five goals last night, and the Navy men's lacrosse team broke a four-game losing streak with a 13-10 victory over No. 9 UMBC at Rip Miller Field in Annapolis.

Navy, which fell out of the national rankings this past week, was in the midst of its longest dry spell since 1997. The Mids (5-6 overall, 1-4 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference), however, pumped in a season-high-tying 13 goals in the victory over the Retrievers (6-4, 1-5) to earn their first league victory of the season.

"I feel good for our team," said Navy coach Richie Meade. "It's been a difficult few weeks, but I'm proud of the team for hanging in there."

Conklin netted the first of his goals on Navy's opening possession, coming off a faceoff just over a minute into the game. UMBC's Josh Gerber knotted the game at one apiece when Adam Shiley found him with 10:40 remaining in the first period.

The two teams combined to score eight more times in the first quarter. An unassisted goal by Navy's Joe Bossi with two seconds left gave Navy a 6-4 advantage.

The second period featured a pair of goals by each team, including an extra-man score at the 5:41 mark by Gerber, who was fed by Brendan Mundorf (four goals, two assists).

With Navy holding a three-goal lead, Gerber (three goals) scored his third goal of the game as the Retrievers cut the deficit to 10-8 after three quarters.

Mundorf scored his third goal when he connected at the 8:58 mark in the fourth quarter, narrowing the deficit to one for the fifth time.

Junior midfielder Ben Bailey (three goals) padded the Mids' lead when freshman midfielder Jon Birsner passed the ball from the top-right side of the box to an open Bailey in front of the cage.

Mundorf led the Retrievers back with an unassisted one-on-one goal at the 5:40 mark to once again put the Retrievers within striking distance at 11-10.

Down by two with 1:37 to play, UMBC was forced to pull keeper Tim Flanagan out of the goal. That's when Conklin fed Bailey for the final goal.
