Mary V. Pierce, 72, city schools crossing guard

Mary V. Pierce, a retired city schools crossing guard, died of complications from diabetes Saturday at Future Care Old Court. The Windsor Hills resident was 72.

Born Mary Verdell Franklin in Freeman, Va., she was raised on West Preston Street and was a 1947 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School.

She was a crossing guard at Hilton and Pimlico elementary schools until her retirement 10 years ago.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Nutter Funeral Home, 2501 Gwynns Falls Parkway.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, James Pierce, a retired city firefighter and paramedic; two daughters, Deborah Morton and Rhonda Thompson, both of Baltimore; three sisters, Lenora Parrish of Stuart, Fla., and Audrey Marable and Elaine Tilghman, both of Baltimore; three grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
