On March 30, 2003, LILLIAN VANZANDT, age 83, of Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg, MD, formerly of Linthicum Heights, MD and Berkeley Springs, WV., died at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville, MD. Born September 2, 1919, in Coburn, VA.; beloved daughter of the late Charles and Virginia Meade Spinks; surviving are two daughters, Pauline G. Pumphrey Swaim of Hollywood, MD., and Virginia Lee "Ginny" Pumphrey Householder of Berkeley Springs, WV.; two sisters, Lucille Roland of Owings Mills, MD. an Rebecca Hall of Pasadena, MD.; three grandsons, Douglas A. Swaim, Jr., of Hollywood, MD, Dennie R. Swaim of Hedgesville, WV and Dannie P. Swaim of Martinsburg of WV; one step-grandson, Troy D. Householder of Bridgeport, WV.; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn M. Swaim and Cory D. Swaim, both of Hollywood, MD; three step-great-grandchildren, Corbin D. Householder, Gena M. Householder and Carter M. Householder, all of Bridgeport, WV. and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul O. Pumphrey, in 1946 and her second husband Raymond M. VanZandt in 1978; one sister Goldie Spinks and five brothers, Balise Spinks, Worth Spinks, Eno Spinks, Lud Spinks and Gordon Spinks. She was a member of Hancock United Methodist Church, Hancock, MD., where she participated in the United Methodist Women and the Asbury Guild. During her working career, she was a cosmetologist and manager for Hutzler Brothers and Hoschild Kohns, Baltimore, MD., a manager for Rosen's Department Store, Hancock, MD., owner and operator of the American Shop Clothing Store, Berkeley Springs, Warfordsburg, PA. After retiring to the Asbury Village, she worked as a volunteer manager at the Fair Exchange Clothing Shop and served on the Alter Guild. A memorial service will held at 2 P.M. on Saturday, April 12, 2003, at the Guild Memorial Chapel, Asbury Methodist Village, 211 Russell., Gaithersburg, MD., with the Reverends Clarenct T. Kaylor and Duane Jensen officiating. Burial will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Asbury Foundation Benevolent Fund, 201 Russel Ave, Gaithersburg, MD. 20877.
