Helling primed to make first O's start tonight

April 03, 2003|By Roch Kubatko

Rick Helling is scheduled to make his Orioles debut tonight, and he won't be subjected to the same weather conditions as Opening Day starter Rodrigo Lopez, who had to peer through the snowflakes to get signs from catcher Geronimo Gil.

"I'm from North Dakota," Helling said, "so it might have been an advantage for me to pitch in the snow."

A fly-ball pitcher usually won't find much comfort at Camden Yards, and Helling has allowed an average of 33 home runs over the past five seasons, including 31 last year with Arizona Diamondbacks.

"You can't change the park. You've just got to pitch your ballgame," he said.
