Jones, Goncz are named teachers of year

April 03, 2003

Severna Park Middle School social studies teacher Weldon Andre Jones has been named Anne Arundel County's 2003 Public School Teacher of the Year. The county's Private School Teacher of the Year is Gina L. Goncz, a science teacher at St. Martin's Lutheran School.

Jones, who has taught in the county school system for 29 years, uses storytelling and humor to convey lessons to his students. "He makes his class the funniest, but not too fun, just enough that we learn with a smile," a student wrote of Jones' teaching style.

Outside the classroom, Jones has advised student government groups and been involved in projects ranging from oyster planting to talent shows.

Goncz, a 16-year teaching veteran, wrote St. Martin's hands-on science curriculum, organized students to help test water quality in Annapolis and created a forensic science unit in which students use their lab skills to solve staged crimes.

The two teachers were honored at a ceremony in Linthicum Tuesday evening. Jones received a cash prize totaling $1,600 from Comcast and the county school system. Goncz received $1,100 from Comcast.
