Bigbie's single gives O's victory

Orioles 4, Marlins 2

March 27, 2003|By Joe Christensen

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Rodrigo Lopez pitched five solid innings in his final tuneup of the spring yesterday, and Larry Bigbie hit the go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh inning, as the Orioles defeated the Florida Marlins, 4-2. Lopez, the Orioles' Opening Day starter, held the Marlins to one run on two hits. Florida starter Brad Penny held the Orioles scoreless until the seventh, when B.J. Surhoff hit a leadoff single and advanced to second base on an error. Jeff Conine singled and Jay Gibbons walked to load the bases. Tony Batista then brought home the Orioles' first run with an infield single. After Bigbie brought home the go-ahead run, Geronimo Gil added to the lead with a run-scoring single.

Who's hot

Rodrigo Lopez: In 23 innings this spring, he allowed just five earned runs and 14 hits.

Deivi Cruz: Made three nice plays in the field and has done a pretty good Mike Bordick impersonation this spring, playing 18 games without an error.

Tony Batista: Had two more hits, raising his average to .405, and seems to be back in manager Mike Hargrove's good graces after some lackadaisical play. "Tony has a little more bounce in his step," Hargrove said.

Who's not

Jim Beattie and Mike Flanagan: Not signing Ivan Rodriguez hurt a little worse yesterday when he hit that seventh-inning home run off Orioles reliever Willis Roberts.

Jerry Hairston: With another 0-for-4, his early spring success has been tapered a bit. He's now batting .339.

Mike Hargrove: His team played one of its best games of the year before a cable audience back in Baltimore, but that pitching change with two outs in the ninth won't win him any favors from the media.

Injury report

Marty Cordova was scratched from yesterday's lineup with a lower back strain. Hargrove said Cordova was day-to-day.
