Spring preview

March 21, 2003

Steve Clevenger

Mt. St. Joe, shortstop/pitcher

As a sure-fielding sophomore shortstop last spring, Clevenger batted .357 with 24 RBIs and 12 steals. As a pitcher, he was 5-1.

Steve Johnson

St. Paul's, pitcher/infielder

Last spring, Johnson became the first freshman named All- Metro after pitching (7-1, three saves, 2.63 ERA) and batting (.350, 32 runs) the Crusaders to the MIAA A Conference title and The Sun's No. 1 ranking.

Kevin Marrie

River Hill, pitcher

Hard-throwing right-hander, 6 feet 5 and 212 pounds, has a scholarship to Coastal Carolina.

Preston Pehrson

Broadneck, catcher

A returning All-Metro catcher, Pehrson (6-2, 225) is a left-handed power hitter who hit .476 with 13 extra-base hits and 24 RBIs.

Jeff Poff

Mt. St. Joe, outfield/pitcher

Second-team All-Metro last year as a sophomore, Poff hit .473 with 36 runs scored.

Vyt Rivers

Atholton, first base/pitcher

An All-Metro first baseman as a junior on last year's 2A state champion, the left-handed Rivers had five homers and 11 doubles and led Howard County in RBIs (36).

A.J. Tinnirella

Centennial, shortstop

An outstanding fielder with soft hands and a good arm. Second-team All-Metro last season, he batted .446.

Alex Vitale

Severna Park, first base

Vitale emerged as a big bat in the 3A Falcons' run to their first region title in 28 years. Second-team All-Metro, Vitale hit a robust .500 with 10 doubles, three homers and 31 RBIs.

Ambrose Wooden

Gilman, shortstop/pitcher

Despite being a Notre Dame- bound football player, Wooden has speed, a strong arm and a quick bat, making him an interesting baseball prospect that some club might draft.

Tyler Young

Old Mill, outfielder

This speedy senior, who has a lot of pop in his bat, might be Anne Arundel County's top returning player. Second-team All-Metro, Young batted .459 with 14 extra-base hits, 11 stolen bases, 25 runs scored and 23 RBIs.
