Cordova, Valentin hit homers in tie

O's 5, Cards 5 (12 inn.)

March 21, 2003|By Roch Kubatko

JUPITER, Fla. - The Orioles and St. Louis Cardinals played to a 5-5 tie in 12 innings at Roger Dean Stadium yesterday. Marty Cordova hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to give him the team lead, and John Valentin tied the game in the ninth with a bases-empty shot off Steve Kline. The Cardinals scored three runs in the second inning off Sidney Ponson, and Scott Rolen homered off him as part of a two-run fourth. Ponson walked the first two batters in the second, and the Cardinals capitalized with run-scoring singles by Tino Martinez, Mike Matheny and Fernando Vina. Ponson was charged with five runs in five innings, and he left the clubhouse without speaking to reporters. The Orioles loaded the bases with one out in the 10th before Valentin hit into a double play.

Who's hot

Marty Cordova: Three-run homer seemed meaningless at the time, but it ended up being huge. For anyone keeping score at home, that's five home runs, no freak injuries.

John Valentin: He's been warned: Forcing extra innings in an exhibition game won't win him friends in the press box.

Who's not

Melvin Mora: The latest Oriole to come down with a sore throat. Must be damp and musty in fourth place.

Jeff Reboulet: Made two bad throws from shortstop and went hitless again. One of baseball's really good guys is scuffling.

Sidney Ponson: It's a little late to be giving up this many runs, and a little early to be blowing off the media.

Jack Cust: Two walks, two strikeouts. It's called a bat. Try swinging it.

Injury report

Mora didn't make the trip because of a sore throat. ... Reboulet received treatment again yesterday for a sore left groin muscle. ... Cust has been slowed by an ingrown toenail.
