William Aaron Heckert, 72, electrical engineer

William Aaron Heckert, a retired electrical engineer, died Saturday of complications from cancer at Union Memorial Hospital. The Lutherville resident was 72.

Born in Lewistown, Pa., he earned a degree in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1958 and a master's degree from Drexel Institute of Technology. He served in the Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954.

He was hired in 1958 by the Glenn L. Martin Co. in Middle River where he helped design systems for the Gemini space program. He subsequently was a Westinghouse Corp. engineer at Hunt Valley, where he retired in 1996.

Mr. Heckert was a member of the American Legion, Elks and Rolling Rocks social club, all in Lewistown.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Westminster Church of the Brethren, Park Place and Bond Street.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, the former Suzanne Guss; three sons, William Bryan Heckert of Monkton, Timothy Aaron Heckert of Westminster and Jeffrey Guss Heckert of Philadelphia; two daughters, S. Beth Heckert Tevis of Westminster and Patricia Lou Heckert Magee of Bel Air; a brother, Robert L. Heckert of Port Royal, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.
