Grand slam, 2 other HRs power Expos

Expos 11, Orioles 5

March 19, 2003|By Roch Kubatko

VIERA, Fla. -- Jeff Liefer hit a tiebreaking homer off Jorge Julio to open the sixth inning, and the Montreal Expos piled on left-hander Mike Mohler in the seventh to defeat the Orioles, 11-5, yesterday. Julio hadn't given up a run in six innings before yesterday. Jose Macias hit a grand slam off Omar Daal on a two-strike pitch to give the Expos a 4-1 lead in the fourth, but Melvin Mora and Jeff Conine went deep in the sixth to tie it. Daal took a shutout into the fourth, but two walks and an infield hit loaded the bases. Macias' homer accounted for the only runs off Daal, who allowed six hits over five innings. Daal had permitted six runs in his previous seven innings. The Expos scored five runs off Mohler, one coming on John Valentin's throwing error. Jose Leon homered in the eighth.

Who's hot

Melvin Mora: Petitioning league to allow yesterday's homer to count as elusive 20th last season.

Who's not

Mark Wiley: Two pitches after the pitching coach's mound visit, Daal serves up a grand slam. Didn't think "groove one" would be taken seriously.

Omar Daal: In keeping with the spirit of the Expos' franchise, one of their batters relocated Daal's pitch.

Geronimo Gil: Passed ball allows run to score in ninth. That's midseason form for Gil.

Mike Mohler: He packed a lot of bad into one inning. And speaking of packing ...

Fundamentals: Both teams botched the same rundown play. It's not like they work on this stuff all spring.

Injury report

Tony Batista didn't make the trip, recovering from an infection that caused a sore throat and fever. ... Jay Gibbons had his right arm wrapped again as part of a heat treatment to alleviate forearm stiffness. ... Jeff Reboulet continues to receive treatment for a sore left groin muscle, a bother since the second intrasquad game.
