On March 17, 2003, IRENE M. THOMAS, age 93, a resident of the Fairfax Nursing Center, Fairfax, Virginia. Her death followed her inability to fully recover from a fall in which she broke her hip in July, 2002. Irene is survived by her son and his wife, Charles and Audrey Thomas, Jr., of Winchester, Virginia; a son-in-law, Robert S. Connell, of Sandy, Utah; a brother and his wife, Charles and Roslyn McLeod, of Silver Spring, Maryland; grandchildren, Robert C. Connell, Barbara Neale, Jennifer Hudders, and Suzanne Herring; and six great-grandchildren. Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Charles T. Thomas, Sr.; her daughter, Ann Connell; her sister and her husband, Hazel and Frank Coe; and her brother and his wife, Robert and Barbara McLeod. Irene was born on December 26, 1909, in Augusta, Maine. Her family traveled much of the East Coast as her father, a stone mason, helped build a number of U.S. Post Office buildings. Following graduation from Hyattsville High School, she attended the Lucy Webb Hayes School of Nursing at Sibley Hospital, Washington, D.C., and graduated with the class of 1930. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Woodlawn, Maryland, at 11:30 A.M., Saturday, March 22, 2003, with a graveside service officiated by Irene's nephew, the Reverend Frank Coe. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made to the Virginia Community Hospice, 122-A East Broad Street, Falls Church, Virginia 22046, or any charity of your choice.
