Milford Mill's girls basketball players came to UMBC's RAC Arena this year looking for six to be their lucky number. Last night, they got halfway there.

Three proved to be the No. 6 Millers' lucky number in their state Class 3A semifinal. The Millers, who are still looking for their first state crown, hit 10 three-pointers to beat Patuxent, 57-45, and advance to the state title game for the sixth straight year.

Sophomore point guard Shawna Scott hit four three-pointers, all in the first half, as the Millers sank seven three-pointers in the first half to build a 10-point halftime lead from which Patuxent never recovered.

The Millers (22-3) will meet defending champion Gwynn Park in a rematch of last year's 3A final tomorrow at 8 p.m. at UMBC. Gwynn Park (21-5) defeated Urbana, 48-33, in last night's other semifinal.

With a pair of 6-foot-2 players, Charese Baldwin and Amanda Robinson, in the lane, the Panthers (20-6) clogged up the middle and dared the Millers to shoot from the perimeter.

"They weren't coming out. They were just staying, so what's the point of passing the ball if we're wide open?" said senior guard Qiana Cheatham, who hit three three-pointers and finished with 19 points.

Scott scored 16 of her 18 points in the first half, nailing her fourth three-pointer of the half with three seconds left to give the Millers a 35-25 halftime lead.

Candyce Jeter, Cheatham and Carlene Bryson hit consecutive 20-footers and Melanie Goron hit a 10-foot baseline jumper to run the Millers' lead to 50-27 with 37 seconds left in the third quarter.

The three-point fest wasn't what the Millers had planned for the Panthers, who are in just their sixth year as a varsity program.

"The plan was to kick it down low and get their big people in foul trouble," said Scott, "but they weren't really playing on the outside, so we shot the ball. We shot well."
