Magic review today is benefit show for Cub Scout pack

The Friends of Cub Scout Pack 381 will hold a magic show at 7 p.m. today at Westminster High School Auditorium.

The Magic Capers Review will perform magic and illusion. The group also will honor Ray Corbin, known as Raymonde, for his work in magic.

Tickets are $5, with proceeds going to Cub pack activities. The school is at 1225 Washington Road.

Guests to conduct Sousa concert Thursday

The Carroll Concert Band under the direction of Glenn Patterson will present its eighth annual Sousa Style Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Winters Mill High School auditorium.

This concert will honor Robert E. Kersey, arts advocate and retired acting public school superintendent, for his dedication to the arts in Carroll County.

Guest conductors scheduled to perform a variety of styles of music are: Bryan Eber, former Liberty High band director; George Smith III, former South Carroll High band director; Linda Kirkpatrick, McDaniel College band director; and Kristen Gottleib, Winters Mill's band director.

Selections will include "King Cotton," "Fairest of the Fair," "Barnum & Bailey's Favorite," "Pathfinder of Panama" and "Stars & Stripes Forever" marches, "Abram's Pursuit," "Clarinet on the Town," "Jazz Waltz," "Shenandoah," "Over the Rainbow," "Hear That Dixieland Band" and a Gershwin medley.

The concert will include vocals by Patterson, the director, and by Ann Barcroft, and it will include David Duree on clarinet.

Tickets are $6; $5 for senior citizens; $3 for students; and $11 for families. Tickets are available at music stores around the county. Proceeds support the Carroll County Arts Council Musical Instrument Bank and the concert band's Summer Music Camp Scholarship.

2 churches to sponsor Country Gospel Music Show

The Dixie Melody Boys, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and the Dove Brothers will be the featured artists at this year's 25th annual Country Gospel Music Show at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. March 23 at Westminster High School.

The event is sponsored by Bethesda and Zion United Methodist churches.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door for the main floor, and $6 in advance and $8 at the door for the balcony. Tickets are available at Bullock's on Route 32 and Bullock's Airport Inn off Route 97 north, Sykesville Federal Savings & Loan, Framing Plus in Eldersburg, Hess Music in Manchester and Menchey Music in Hanover, Pa.

Photo album workshop scheduled in Eldersburg

Creative Memories in Eldersburg will hold a workshop on scrapbooking from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 5 at St. Joseph's Catholic Community Church.

The "Memory Savers" workshop will feature scrapbooking experts demonstrating how to start photo albums and safe and creative photo preservation. Participants should take photos to begin an album.

The fee is $35 for all day. Registration is required by March 29.

Arts council plans trip to see `Hairspray' in May

Carroll County Arts Council will sponsor a bus trip to New York to see Hairspray on May 28.

The hit musical is based on John Waters' Baltimore film of the same name.

Participants will have time for lunch on their own or sightseeing.

The bus will leave from Westminster at 7 a.m. and return at 10 p.m.

The cost is $140 for arts council members and $150 for nonmembers and includes bus, continental breakfast, mezzanine seat, bus snack and gratuities. Registration is required.

Gospel, big-band events set for Eichelberger center

Eichelberger Performing Arts Center in Hanover, Pa., has announced coming events.

Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver with the Lewis Family will present a gospel and bluegrass concert at 8 p.m. March 22. Lawson has been singing more than 30 years, forming Quicksilver in 1979 and blending harmony into bluegrass. The Lewis family has been performing since 1951. Tickets are $28 and $23.

The Sweetheart's Concert that was postponed from Valentine's weekend because of bad weather will be held at 3 p.m. March 23. The Colgan Brothers Band & Blue Moon Big Band will perform. Tickets are $15 and $10.

Celtic concert slated at Westminster cafe

The Pour House Cafe in Westminster will hold a "Celtic Invasion" concert for St. Patrick's Day from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.

Paul Harrison and Mary Madison will perform. Harrison is a cafe regular, and Madison is of Irish descent. They will sing traditional Irish tunes.
