Big shots help Red Sox rally to win over O's

Red Sox 6, Orioles 3

March 13, 2003

Trot Nixon and Shea Hillenbrand homered yesterday for the Boston Red Sox, who fell behind briefly before rallying to defeat the Orioles, 6-3, in Fort Myers, Fla. Boston grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third on a leadoff double by Lou Merloni -- right fielder Jay Gibbons took a poor angle on the ball -- and a broken-bat single by Adrian Brown. The Orioles took a 2-1 lead against Ramiro Mendoza in the fourth, getting a run-scoring double by Jeff Conine and an RBI single from Gibbons. Nixon hit a two-run homer off Rick Helling in the fourth, and Hillenbrand hit a three-run shot off John Stephens in the fifth. Helling allowed three runs and six hits in four innings. Stephens, his mechanics out of whack, walked three batters in two innings. Gibbons drove in another run with a double in the sixth off former Orioles closer Mike Timlin.

Who's hot

Jose Leon: Batting .428 in 12 games. He scored twice yesterday after replacing David Segui. Not sure he'd get noticed even if he wore a dress.

Who's not

David Segui: Orioles are waiting to exhale.

John Stephens: Sources tell The Sun that Hillenbrand's home run just landed.

Jorge Julio: Hasn't allowed a run in four innings. Still waiting for his first save opportunity since the Senators moved to Texas.

Jeremy Giambi: Got picked off first base after a single. His brother never lets that happen. Then again, Jason's usually circling the bases.

Mixed results

Jay Gibbons: Ran into an out and took a poor angle on a fly ball, but also had two hits and two RBIs. It's like seeing the glass half full, then knocking it over.

Injury report

Segui will have X-rays taken today after being hit on the base of the right thumb during batting practice. Otherwise, manager Mike Hargrove minimized the injuries in camp. "There's nothing seriously wrong with anybody," he said, "except for a hangnail." -- Roch Kubatko
