A competitive cheerleader until January, Arundel's Justin Tippett was a late addition to his wrestling team and a surprise Class 4A-3A state champion at 189 pounds.

And with a pin and a major decision in last night's Senior All-Star Classic at River Hill, he again proved he's no fluke.

"Wrestling and cheerleading share similarities in muscle control, tumbling, using your hips," said Tippett, a cheerleading national champion. "In cheerleading, you're also lifting girls."

Last night, Tippett was throwing the guys. He twice tossed Wicomico's 2A-1A champ Jarell Chandler to his back in building a 10-1 lead, then pinned him in 1:24. Tippett twice threw state runner-up Elliott Freed of Boys' Latin in an 11-3 rout.

Mark Nakasone of Centennial showed up to River Hill tired from practice as a lacrosse goalie, adding, "My legs were pretty much gone." But the 2A-1A state champion at 145 pounds overcame a 4-1 deficit to beat private schools champion Brian Propst of Mount St. Joseph, 5-4, and recovered from a 1-0 deficit to beat Severna Park's Steve Smith, 3-1.

Three-time champion Mark Frey (125) of Archbishop Curley earned Outstanding Lowerweight wrestler honors, decking 2A-1A champ Justin Bradley of Mardela in 3:17. Frey led 16-2 before state runner-up Steve Yaruta of Chesapeake of Anne Arundel had to default with an injury.

Private schools champ Jerome Featherstone (152) of Boys' Latin scored six takedowns in a 12-3 rout of 2A-1A runner-up Darric Kamp of Northern of Garrett, and pinned the 4A-3A's Chris Dyke of Northeast in 5:11. Two-time state champ Sam Lewnes (160) of Mount St. Joseph scored a 9-4 win over two-time 2A-1A champ Trey Kohl of Kent and hammered Severna Park's Walker Babington, 21-6.

State champ Tim Bohlman (119) of Mount St. Joseph easily routed two-time 4A-3A champ Brian Shapiro of Churchill, 7-2, and edged Kent's Artie Kaehler, 7-6. Andrew Schlaffer (135), a 4A-3A champion for Dulaney, ripped Mount St. Joseph's Bobby Kinsella, 16-1, then scored a 27-second pin over Williamsport's Corey Leggett.

State champ Jim Van Daniker (112) of Perry Hall breezed to his 9-2 victory over the 2A-1A's Zach Dawson, and won his private-schools bout by forfeit. Perry Hall's Nick Ramsel (140) pinned DeMatha's Erik Fawcett and decisioned North Caroline's Andrew Melchior. Severna Park resident Bode Ogunwole, a two-time National Preps heavyweight champion, pinned state runner-up Keith English of Mardela and claimed a tougher than expected 13-5 win over Severna Park's champ Brian Payer.
