Mitch Guest

Glen Burnie, basketball

The junior guard scored 82 points, grabbed 21 rebounds and had 19 assists in three games to lead Glen Burnie to the Class 4A East regional title, the Gophers' first regional crown since 1994 and fourth overall.

Guest, who averages 22.2 points and 4.4 assists, scored 35 points in a 68-41 win over C. Milton Wright. He had 30 in a 63-60 win over Frederick.

In the championship game, then No. 15-ranked Glen Burnie (19-5) faced an unbeaten Thomas Johnson team (23-0) and an overflow crowd in Frederick that had come to see Patriots coach Tom Dickman's final home game. Dickman, the winningest Maryland public school coach with 592 career wins, will direct the Hood College men's team next season.

Guest scored 17 points and had seven assists in the 70-69 upset win, and he made four free throws in the final 30 seconds.


Alex McGuire

Arundel, basketball

The sophomore scored 37 points, grabbed 29 rebounds, and contributed nine assists and five steals as the No. 3 Wildcats rolled to the Class 4A East regional title.

A 5-foot-9 guard, McGuire had 12 points and 11 rebounds in a 59-39 win over Broadneck. She had 26 points, eight rebounds and four assists in an 87-37 win over Frederick. In the regional final, she contributed 19 points, 10 rebounds and four assists to an 81-52 win over No. 15 Meade.

A second-team All-Anne Arundel County pick last season, McGuire leads the Wildcats with 18.1 points and shoots 56.4 percent from the field. An Amateur Athletic Union player since age 10, she now plays for the Hurricanes. McGuire carries a 3.94 grade-point average.

Nominate athletes

Two athletes (one boy and one girl) will be selected each week and featured in Wednesday's editions. To be nominated, athletes must play for their high school team. Only coaches can nominate Athletes of the Week.
