Culinary fest in Philly

Seventy cookbook authors, chefs and wine authorities will be featured at the KitchenAid the Book and the Cook festival that begins in Philadelphia Friday.

The 10-day festival includes events at more than 60 of the city's restaurants, including meals and demonstrations by celebrity chefs and authors. Among those participating are Steve Raichlen, Sara Moulton, James Peterson, Roy Yamaguchi, Martin Yan and Patricia Yeo.

Tickets range from $25 to more than $100. Reservations can be made directly with the participating restaurants.

As part of the event, there will be a Culinary Market and Showcase at the Fort Washington Expo Center, 1100 Virginia Drive, in Fort Washington, Pa., from March 21-23. Tickets for that show are $20, $15 for seniors and $10 for children under 12 and can be purchased at the door or through Ticketmaster by calling 215-336-2000.

Cereal goes fruity

Now you can enjoy fruit in your Cheerios without stopping by your grocery's produce section.

General Mills has introduced Berry Burst Cheerios featuring freeze-dried fruit.

The new cereal comes in two flavors - strawberry and triple berry with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. The suggested retail price is $3.69 for an 11-ounce box. The cereal is available in grocery stores throughout the country.

Rockfish dish nets top prize

Rich Hoffman, a chef at Rudys' 2900 in Finksburg, knows how to cook rockfish. The chef captured first place in the Sixth Annual Maryland Rockfish Celebration Cooking Contest. It is the second year in a row that he's taken that honor.

Hoffman won $500 at the event last month with his dish of Seared Rockfish Fillet With Oyster-and-Corn Stew. The fish was seared in butter with ground mustard seed, salt, pepper and lemon juice and served on top Virginia ham, caramelized corn-bread pudding and wilted spinach placed in the oyster-and-corn stew.

Palate-pleasing flavors

Bay leaf, lemon grass, sesame, chile peppers, mustard and wasabi are among the intense flavors expected to capture American palates in the coming year, according to a new report from McCormick & Co.

Fifteen cookbook authors and chefs who were surveyed for the 2003 McCormick Flavor Forecast say they believe Americans are continuing their search for bold, spicy flavors, ethnic dishes and organic food. Other flavors high on the list are turmeric, cinnamon, pepper, vanilla, coriander/cilantro and sea salt.
