Bowie draws Lenoir-Rhyne in tournament

Columbus (Ga.) State plays host in Div. II region

March 11, 2003|By Bill Free

Bowie State (26-4) was seeded second yesterday in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional basketball tournament, and will meet seventh-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) College (22-7) of the South Atlantic Conference on Friday in the opening round at Columbus (Ga.) State.

Columbus State (27-4) of the Peach Belt Athletic Conference earned the right to play host to the eight-team, three-day tournament, getting the top seed over Bowie State, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion.

The CIAA is apparently considered a stronger conference than the Peach Belt by the presence of four teams in the South Atlantic Regional, including CIAA runner-up Virginia Union, which could meet Bowie for a fourth time this season in the second round.

The South Atlantic champion will be one of eight teams advancing to Lakeland, Fla., March 26-29, where the championship of the 64-team field will be determined.
