O's slip, fall for 3rd time in row

Marlins 5, Orioles 2

March 10, 2003|By Roch Kubatko

The Orioles dropped their third consecutive game yesterday, managing only one hit against A.J. Burnett and five overall in a 5-2 loss to the Florida Marlins. David Segui had the only hit off Burnett in four innings. Burnett struck out seven, the last three coming in his final inning. Pat Hentgen allowed two runs and five hits in four innings. The Marlins scored a run in the fifth against Travis Driskill, one in the seventh against Buddy Groom, and Ramon Castro homered off Mike Mohler in the eighth. The Orioles got a run in the fifth on an error by shortstop Alex Gonzalez, and another in the sixth on a rundown. Deivi Cruz and Jay Gibbons were credited with RBIs. The Orioles put runners on second and third with none out in the ninth against Braden Looper, but couldn't score.

Who's hot

David Segui: With two more hits, he's batting .417. Most important, it isn't just his average that's healthy.

Al Martin: Went 4-for-5 with two RBIs.

Who's not

Anyone facing A.J. Burnett: Topped out at 97 mph. Imagine Pedro Martinez vs. the Camden Riversharks.

Jerry Hairston: Just plant and throw. Tends to go airborne a lot, which is fine if you're Tracy McGrady.

Mike Mohler: It's OK to give up a homer to a Marlins catcher, but only if his nickname is "Pudge."

Mixed results

Pat Hentgen: Two runs in four innings qualifies as improvement, but it might be premature to start clearing shelf space for another Cy Young.

Injury report

Tony Batista rested yesterday but is scheduled to make today's trip to Sarasota, Fla. Batista, who is receiving treatment on his right knee, has missed four of the past five games. ... Outfielder Marty Cordova, who has a sore right calf, has missed three of the past four games. ... Scott Erickson had surgery on Friday to repair his torn labrum.
