Daal gets roughed up once again

Twins 6, Orioles 4

Baseball

March 09, 2003|By Joe Christensen

Michael Cuddyer's home run off Orioles reliever Eric DuBose broke a sixth-inning tie, and the Minnesota Twins held on for their second victory over the Orioles in five days. Omar Daal had his second consecutive shaky start for the Orioles, allowing three runs on seven hits over three innings. Jerry Hairston had another productive day in the leadoff spot, reaching base every time he came to the plate. Twins starter Rick Reed hit Hairston with a pitch in the first inning, and Hairston was called out trying to steal second base - a call the Orioles didn't like. Hairston singled in the third inning and walked in the fourth. The Orioles fielded a potential Opening Day lineup and had six hits in three innings against Reed. "We're playing well right now," Orioles manager Mike Hargrove said. "If we continue to play like this, we'll be OK."

Who's hot

Jerry Hairston: Reaching base at a .571 clip.

Geronimo Gil: Two more hits raised his average to .583.

Eric DuBose: Dominating like he did at Mississippi State - in 1997.

Who's not

Omar Daal: Lost 19 games in 2000. Gulp.

B.J. Ryan: DuBose's rise would make it easier for Orioles to trade him.

Mike Fetters: Former Orioles reliever did his goofy neck-snap move before every pitch, and then got called for a balk.

Injury report

Tony Batista was back in the starting lineup after missing three games with a sore knee. ... Marty Cordova was back in the lineup for the first time since he was hit by a pitch in the right calf Wednesday.
