Big ninth off Roberts caps rally

Dodgers 9, Orioles 4

March 08, 2003|By Roch Kubatko

The Orioles hit three home runs yesterday, but the Los Angeles Dodgers scored seven runs over the last two innings and rallied for a 9-4 victory. Gary Matthews hit a two-run homer off Darren Dreifort in the first inning, Jeff Conine went deep leading off the fourth, and David Segui homered to begin the sixth. Jerry Hairston led off the first with a double, and Matthews rattled the seats in right field for a 2-0 lead. Conine gave the Orioles a 3-2 lead when he connected off Odalis Perez, and Segui padded the margin. But Larry Barnes' two-run double in the eighth off Rigo Beltran tied the game, and Ron Coomer bounced a single into center field to give the Dodgers a 5-4 lead. Willis Roberts gave up four runs in the ninth, three coming on Chin-Feng Chen's homer. Rick Helling allowed two runs in the fourth, and left with two outs after being struck on the right forearm by Coomer's comebacker. Manager Mike Hargrove said he wanted Buddy Groom to face a left-hander, and Helling's removal wasn't related to an injury. Helling said he was fine.

Who's hot

The crowd: Fort Lauderdale features the only sauna with bleachers and a concession stand.

Jeff Conine: Gets big laughs when faking an injury after coming out of games. Yesterday, he hurt Dodgers pitching.

Who's not

Willis Roberts: His first warm-up pitch hit the backstop. Who knew that would constitute his best stuff?

Rigo Beltran: Should be sampling the spread at the minor-league complex real soon.

Dave Roberts: Dodgers leadoff man reaches on a bunt, then gets picked off. Pre-game stretching apparently does nothing for brain cramps.

Mixed reviews

Luis Matos: Plays a beautiful center field, but will he ever hit?

Rick Helling: Orioles' newest No. 35 was Mussina for three innings, Towers for the fourth.

Injury report

Third baseman Tony Batista was given another day to rest his sore right knee. He's scheduled to make today's trip to Fort Myers, Fla. ... Outfielder Marty Cordova also should accompany the team to Fort Myers after receiving treatment yesterday for his sore right calf. ... Infielder Jeff Reboulet has been playing with a sore left groin muscle. It began bothering him during the second intrasquad game.
