Five-run ninth gives O's 6th win in past 7 games

Orioles 6, Dodgers 2

March 07, 2003|By Joe Christensen

Jose Leon hit a two-run triple with two outs in the ninth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie, and the Orioles broke things open to win for the sixth time in their past seven games. Rodrigo Lopez, the Orioles' projected Opening Day starter, pitched three scoreless innings and Jason Johnson allowed one run in three innings of relief. The Orioles scored a first-inning run off Kazuhisa Ishii and then remained scoreless until the ninth, when, with the score tied, they scored five runs off Dodgers reliever Bill Simas - all with two outs. Larry Bigbie and Eli Whiteside singled, setting the stage for Leon's triple into the right-field corner. Ed Rogers had a run-scoring single, and then Luis Matos followed with a two-run homer. The Dodgers scored one in the ninth off Orioles reliever Bill Pulsipher.

Who's hot

Rodrigo Lopez: An Opening Day start awaits.

Melvin Mora: Had two hits and was robbed of a bases-loaded double by Dodgers first-base prospect James Loney.

Jorge Julio: Another scoreless inning for the closer, who didn't have a save opportunity after Aug. 15.

Who's not

John Valentin: Hitless in three at-bats with Tony Batista nursing a knee injury.

Larry Bigbie: Still looks strong, even if .176 average doesn't.

Jeff Reboulet: Facing uphill climb to make the roster, he's hitless in six spring at-bats.

Injury report

Tony Batista has played in just four of eight spring-training games and was scratched Wednesday because of a sore knee, but manager Mike Hargrove said it's nothing serious. ... Starting pitcher John Stephens, who was been hobbled by groin and foot injuries, is expected to pitch in today's game against the Dodgers. ... Jay Gibbons crashed into the right-field wall catching a first-inning fly ball by Paul LoDuca, but Gibbons shook off the cobwebs and remained in the game.
