Harford sheriff back at work despite probe by state prosecutor

March 07, 2003|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

BEL AIR - Harford County Sheriff Joseph P. Meadows returned to work yesterday, despite a criminal investigation of him by the state prosecutor's office.

Meadows, 42, had been on paid leave since early last month after a complaint was filed against him by a female employee. The state prosecutor took the case this week and closed an inquiry under way by Howard County police at the request of the Harford office.

Meadows said in a prepared statement: "I chose to remain on leave pending the outcome of our internal investigation, but that investigation has been suspended, and it is unclear how long the current investigation will be under way. The Harford County Sheriff's Office has many capable leaders in its Command Staff, but I cannot remain out of office indefinitely."
