Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow reportedly has been nominated as a candidate for the same position at the University of Tennessee.
According to The Knoxville News Sentinel, Yow's name has been mentioned prominently for a job that will come open when longtime athletic director Doug Dickey retires in June.
In a statement released last night, Yow, 51, said: "I have not been contacted by any representative of the University of Tennessee and I do not expect to be. ... I wish Tennessee ... the very best results in the search for their new athletic director."
However, a source familiar with the situation said Yow had been "informally" contacted by Tennessee. The News Sentinel reported that Yow could become a finalist for the job without applying or expressing interest.
"There's apparently interest on Tennessee's part in considering Debbie, as has been the case with UCLA and Kentucky and others," the source said.
If Yow were to consider talking with Tennessee, it might partly be because her ailing 84-year-old father lives in Gibsonville, N.C., about a three-hour drive from Knoxville.
Yow has been at Maryland for nearly nine years. According to published reports, she earns a little more than $225,000 a year. Her contract runs out in 2008, and, according to a source, there is no buyout clause in the event she takes another job.
