Tim Banks, an assistant coach at Memphis for the past two years, is expected to join Maryland's football program this week as inside linebackers coach.

Banks, 31, was unavailable for comment last night, but the Memphis football office told callers he no longer worked there.

He would complete the Terrapins' staff, which lost two assistants last month. Rod Sharpless resigned the inside linebackers post after paying a prospect, and former running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Mike Locksley took a similar position at Florida.

In two years at Memphis, Banks coached outside linebackers and then cornerbacks. He worked earlier at Bowling Green, where the head coach was current Maryland defensive coordinator Gary Blackney.

Bill O'Brien, originally hired to replace Sharpless as the inside linebackers coach, will now coach running backs.
