A federal grand jury indicted a Howard County accountant yesterday on charges that he submitted false tax returns for individuals who claimed a refund under the earned income credit, but weren't eligible for that tax break.
The 10-count indictment against Lawrence P. Rub, 52, of Glenwood is the latest in a string of cases brought by investigators with the Internal Revenue Service in Baltimore this tax season.
Rub is accused of submitting 203 false claims - totaling $318,459 - dating to at least 1994.
If convicted, Rub could be sentenced to five years in prison on each count.
