Orioles 15, Mets 6

Team gets offensive in victory

March 03, 2003|By Roch Kubatko

Talk about an orange crush. The Orioles (3-1) pounded out 20 hits yesterday and defeated the New York Mets, 15-6, in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Jerry Hairston hit a two-run homer and reached base three times. Gary Matthews had three hits and three RBIs. David Segui had three hits and two RBIs. John Valentin drove in three runs, B.J. Surhoff delivered two RBIs, and Geronimo Gil had three hits and an RBI. Cliff Floyd, who turned down the Orioles' three-year offer to sign with the Mets this winter, belted a two-run homer off Rodrigo Lopez in the first inning. Lopez threw 25 pitches that inning, but he became the first Orioles starter to complete three innings. He retired the last eight batters, two on strikeouts. Matt Riley allowed two runs in the seventh, and Prentice Redman hit a two-run homer off him in the eighth.

Who's hot

Who isn't? The Orioles had 16 hits by the fourth inning. That's 15 more than Dexys Midnight Runners.

David Segui: To keep him in one piece, replace his sheets with bubble wrap.

Geronimo Gil: No balls got by him, behind the plate or beside it.

B.J. Surhoff: This guy is hot.

Who's not

Matt Riley: After the game, wore an ice pack on his ERA.

Art Howe: Was last seen signaling for Barry Zito in the fourth inning.

John Bale: That would have been good advice.

Injury update

Brook Fordyce didn't travel with the team, and still hasn't played this spring, because of a sore throat and swollen glands. ... Scott Erickson will have surgery this week to repair a torn labrum and probably won't pitch again this season, or with the Orioles.
