UMBC dispatches Quinnipiac, ends 9-game skid

Maybe UMBC coach Tom Sullivan should wear a bow tie at every game.

Sporting a bow tie to honor retiring Mount St. Mary's coach Jim Phelan, Sullivan watched his squad dismantle Quinnipiac, 80-58, to halt a nine-game losing streak before 3,034 last night at the RAC Arena in the season finale.

John Zito led five Retrievers in double figures with 17 points, and Rob Gogerty scored 16 points and had five assists. Senior Andre Williams added a season-high 12 points in his final college game.

UMBC (7-20, 5-13 Northeast Conference) found itself in the unusual position of simply playing out the string, as the Retrievers missed the Northeast Conference tournament for the first time in five years.

But on a night when Sullivan made a fashion statement, so too did the Retrievers: Good defense and rebounding never go out of style. The Retrievers played tenacious man-to-man defense and dominated the boards at both ends of the floor to blow out Quinnipiac, which just three weeks ago had handed the Retrievers their worst NEC loss ever, 87-66.

UMBC broke the game open with a 10-0 run midway through the second half and held the Bobcats without a field goal for nearly nine minutes.

The Bobcats (16-11, 10-8) struggled to find their shooting range - making one of 10 three-pointers in the second half - and UMBC was quick to clear the glass. UMBC out-rebounded Quinnipiac 54-31 overall.

"We came back to what we always used to do when we were successful," Sullivan said, "defending and rebounding."

The UMBC starting lineup also sported a new look, as guard Kareem Washington missed his first start with a twisted ankle. He came off the bench to score 12 points.

"We wanted to prove we can play with the top teams in this conference," Williams said. "And this being Senior Night, I wanted to go out with a bang."
