February 28, 2003|By Roch Kubatko

The Orioles blew a two-run lead in the ninth and lost, 4-3, on a two-run single by Jesus Medrano and fielding error by Marty Cordova, who overran the ball. Rafael Pina, who loaded the bases with one out, took the loss. The Orioles scored three runs in the fourth inning off left-hander Vladimir Nunez. All the scoring took place with two outs. Tony Batista, who tripled in the second inning, stroked a run-scoring double. Deivi Cruz singled to right field to deliver Batista and moved up on a throwing error, and he scored on a Geronimo Gil single. Sidney Ponson gave up a run in the first inning on a leadoff walk, a double by Juan Pierre and a sacrifice fly by $10 million catcher Ivan Rodriguez. Rick Helling threw two scoreless innings. Willis Roberts stranded two runners in the sixth, and Juan Rosario did the same in the seventh.

Who's hot

Tony Batista: Were the Mets watching?

Who's not

Marty Cordova: At least his defensive blunder prevented extra innings.

Rafael Pina: Camp stay will end quicker than Chevy Chase's talk show.

Pudge mania: Marlins fans come to Ivan's party dressed as empty seats.

Mixed reviews

Sidney Ponson: Retires the last six; still no run support.

Injury update

Scott Erickson is receiving treatment for plantar fascitis in his right foot, but so far he's still able to throw. Camp injuries have been limited to the usual aches and pains.
