Anne Arundel basketball canceled

plans adjusted

Chalk up another win for the snow as some of yesterday's boys and girls basketball games were postponed or canceled.

Last night's Anne Arundel County boys and girls championship basketball games at Chesapeake were canceled. Marlene Kelly, county athletic administrator, said the Annapolis and Southern boys teams and Arundel and Severna Park girls teams would be declared co-champions.

The quarterfinals of the Baltimore Catholic League/Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference tournament have been moved from today to Sunday at Goucher College.

No. 8-ranked Archbishop Spalding (23-5) will play Calvert Hall (14-14) in the first game at 3:30. Top-seeded and No. 2 Mount St. Joseph (25-3) will play at 5:15 p.m. against Towson Catholic, which defeated Loyola, 72-64, in yesterday's play-in game. The loss ended the 35-year Loyola career of coach Jerry Savage.

No. 9 McDonogh (24-4) will meet St. Maria Goretti at 7 p.m. and No. 11 St. Frances (19-6) will face No. 17 Cardinal Gibbons (17-10) at 8:45 p.m.

Monday's semifinals are scheduled for 6 and 7:45 p.m. The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The MIAA C Conference final between Park and Beth Tfiloh, originally scheduled as part of a doubleheader last night at Villa Julie College with the B Conference championship, has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Monday.

The IAAM A Conference girls basketball semifinals also were postponed yesterday because Archbishop Spalding follows Anne Arundel County's lead and tournament officials wanted both semifinals played on the same day. The games have been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. today.

Should snow force another postponement, the semifinals - No. 19 Spalding at No. 1 St. Frances and No. 9 Roland Park at No. 5 Institute of Notre Dame - would be played at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

Because the B Conference and C Conference semifinals were played yesterday, tournament officials plan to go ahead with tomorrow's championship games in those two conferences, even if the A Conference lags behind. The B and C finals still would be played at Villa Julie, although the times may change.

If the A Conference semifinals are played tomorrow, the final will be moved to Sunday at Villa Julie at a time to be determined.

Public school basketball regional playoffs are scheduled to start today. However, if schools are closed today, games are expected to be made up tomorrow.

The public school regional wrestling tournaments are scheduled today. They will be condensed to a one-day tournament tomorrow if schools are closed today.

Should public school events be postponed today and tomorrow, they will be rescheduled for Monday.
