Brooklyn church to hold winter sale of soups, potatoes

St. John Lutheran Church is offering a chance to thaw out on a wintry day with hot soups, chili, baked potatoes and sweet desserts at its annual Soup and Baked Potato Sale. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at the church, 226 Washburn Ave. at Third Street in Brooklyn.

Carry-out orders are available. The cost of soup is $1.50, with a quart costing is $3.50. Baked potatoes with toppings are $1 to $2, and desserts range from 25 cents to 75 cents. Beverages are available for 25 cents.

The event will also feature a craft table.

Church program puts Bible in modern context

A vision of what the Bible would say if it were written in this century is offered through video clips from the one-man play Witnesses by Curt Cloninger at Wednesday evening Lenten services at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church in Severn.

Each week at 7 p.m. beginning March 12, there will be prayers, simple songs and a short video clip depicting characters who knew Jesus, each presented in a 21st-century context.

A light supper will be served at no charge at 6:30 p.m., and discussion will be held after the video presentation. The community is invited to attend.

Christ the Servant Lutheran Church is at 2622-I Annapolis Road in the Severn Square Shopping Center, next to the Provinces library. The pastor of Christ the Servant is the Rev. Thomas G. Sinnott.

Confirmation class marks Ash Wednesday

The youth confirmation class of Christ the Servant Lutheran Church will prepare ashes for Ash Wednesday.

Palm branches from last year's Palm Sunday will be burned into ashes to be placed on worshipers' foreheads at Ash Wednesday services.

The church is in the Severn Square Shopping Center next to the Provinces Library.

Wednesday's events will include:

7:15 a.m. - ashes and prayers.

8 a.m. - spoken Communion with ashes.

12:15 p.m. - ashes and prayers.

3:15 p.m. - ashes and prayers.

5:15 p.m. - spoken Communion with ashes.

7:30 p.m. - sung Communion with ashes.

Members of the confirmation class are Karen Van Orden, Peter Farina, Ethan Chase, Jodi Lunkenheimer, Christopher Harshbarger, Jenny Gresens and Jacob Frederick.

Spirituality discussion:

Light Center Spiritualist Church will hold services at the Hampton Inn, next to the Motor Vehicle Administration in Glen Burnie. A class on spirituality and the development of mediumship will be held at 7:30 p.m. today. It will include discussion and exercises to develop an awareness of the spirit world. Bible courses:

Ted Daub, professor of Missions at Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Wisconsin, will teach a two-credit college course, "Acts/Missions," from Monday to March 8. The course focuses on the historical, doctrinal and devotional aspects of Apostolic Christianity as recorded in the books of Acts in the New Testament and how they relate to Missions. The class may be audited for $100 or taken for credit for $380. A textbook may be required. 410-647- 9614.

Women's conference:

The Tabernacle Church of Laurel will present its annual "Holy Happening" Women's Conference on March 14 and 15. This year's theme is "The Heart of Worship." Speakers include the Rev. Mary Ann Brown and Ask for America President Carol Poulos. The conference also includes an afternoon of workshops featuring Barnabas Ministries director Jeanne Wyns, Mama's House creator Shirley Menendez, and Life Builders founder Cathy Guerrero.
