Area churches plan Shrove Tuesday pancake suppers

Several Christian churches in Howard County will hold Shrove Tuesday pancake suppers next week.

Trinity Episcopal Church, 7474 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The cost is $6; $3 for children ages 6 to 11. Free for children to age 6. Information: 410-799-7974.

Emory United Methodist Church, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the church fellowship hall, 3810 Church Road, Ellicott City. The cost is $4; $2 for children. An Ash Wednesday worship is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Information: 410-465-4110.

Harwood Park United Methodist Church, 6635 Highland Ave., Elkridge, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. There is no charge. Information: 410-796-2037.

St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 7609 Main St., Sykesville, lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and supper from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $5; $2.50 for children. Information: 410- 795-0767.

St. John's school holding benefit gala tomorrow

St. John's Parish Day School, 9130 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will hold "An Evening in the Rainforest" gala from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. tomorrow to benefit the school's scholarship fund.

Music, dancing and a silent auction are planned.

Tickets are $50.

Jewish Congregation plans Survival Dinner

Columbia Jewish Congregation will sponsor its second annual Survival Dinner, an evening of fun, games and food, tomorrow in Room 100 at the Meeting House in Columbia's Oakland Mills village.

Tickets are $25. Two hundred tickets will be sold. One ticket-holder will win $1,000 and other money awards. Door prizes and silent auctions are also planned. Canto Jan Morrison will be mistress of ceremonies.

Lucky's China Inn will provide a Chinese buffet at 6:30 p.m. A vegetarian option will be available. The event will benefit the congregation's Torah Fund. Tickets are available at the congregation's office in the Meeting House.

Informal Buddhism classes scheduled in Owen Brown

Buddhist nun Kelsang Osel of the Vikatadamshtri Buddhist Center of Baltimore will offer informal classes in Mahayana Buddhism from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way, Columbia.

Chapelgate Church slates `Fresh Start' seminar

Chapelgate Presbyterian Church will offer a "Fresh Start" seminar April 4 and 5 for people who are separated or divorced.

An accompanying seminar - "Fresh Start for Kids," for children ages 6 to 16 of separated, divorced or widowed parents - will be held at the same time. The cost is $55 for adults, $25 for alumni and $15 for children.

Chapelgate Presbyterian is a quarter-mile south of Interstate 70 on Marriottsville Road.

Hopkins United Methodist dinner is rescheduled

Hopkins United Methodist Men has changed its chicken and oyster dinner to March 15 because of inclement weather.

The event, from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., will be held at the church, 13250 Highland Road, Highland.

Christian women's group to hold free seminar

Who Am I? Ministries, a Christian women's group, will hold its second free seminar for women at 2 p.m. March 8 at House of Faith, 3520 New Sudlersville Road, Laurel.

Topics will include "The New Me in 2003," "Get Out of My Comfort Zone" and "Love Makes Things Happen."

Evangelist E. Mcknight will speak.
