Broadneck edges Howard, advances to Tier II public championship game

LAUREL - Eastern Conference champion Broadneck used a hat trick by Patrick Wagner to defeat Howard Conference champion Howard, 6-5, in a Maryland Scholastic Hockey League Tier II public semifinal game at the Gardens Ice House.

Forward Dan Masiulis had a hat trick for Howard.

Both Broadneck and Howard (8-3-1) had advanced to the semifinal with upsets in their conference championship games. Broadneck defeated Severna Park Monday, and Howard defeated Atholton last Friday.

The Bruins (9-4) advanced to today's 5 p.m. Tier II public championship against Montgomery County's Sherwood, which defeated Frederick County champion Linganore, 9-3, in the other semifinal.

Broadneck used two second-period goals by Wagner sandwiched around one by Brock Linderman to take a 4-2 lead after the second period.

The Lions cut the margin to 6-5 when Masiulis scored with 3:20 left, but stellar play by the Broadneck defense and goalie Blake Foster kept Howard from tying the game.
