65-51 loss drops Coppin to 3rd in MEAC

Hoping to take another step in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference race, Coppin State found only disappointment last night during a 65-51 loss to visiting Hampton.

After holding the Pirates (14-8, 10-3) to 28.6 percent shooting in the first half, Coppin was out-rebounded 45-23 for the game and its defensive effectiveness faded in the second half, allowing reserve Mackal Purvis to lead a 13-4 run that made much of the difference.

In a game postponed by a day because of the snowstorm, the loss dropped the Eagles (9-14, 9-5) into third place in the league race and marked their sixth straight setback against Hampton.

Devin Green had 22 points and eight rebounds for the Pirates, who shot 52 percent in the second half, while allowing only 32.7 percent shooting by Coppin.

The Eagles' top offensive threats - Larry Tucker and Jimmy Boykin - combined for 28 points, but made only eight of their 25 shots from the field.

For more than 10 minutes during the first half, Coppin's defense didn't allow one point by Hampton, and the Eagles took a 19-18 lead on Darryl Jones' free throw with 4:18 remaining.

The Pirates missed 15 straight shots in that stretch. Coppin wasn't much better, shooting 33.3 percent in the first half.

Swingman Green provided most of Hampton's firepower with 15 first-half points, and he ended the Pirates' drought with 3:13 left to put his team ahead again, 20-19, on the way to a 23-22 halftime edge.

The game remained close for the first five minutes of the second half, until Hampton got a boost from reserves Purvis and Donald Didlake.

The pair combined to score 11 consecutive points, and Hampton forged a 41-28 lead on Rodney Hughes' layup with 11 minutes remaining.
